You may find that there is a common question in most pellet grills, and that is: “How many pellets for an electric smoker should I use?”, and also “Is one pound of wood chips equal to another?”
You should understand that there are different types of wood chips. For some reason, the manufacturer mixes up hardwood with softwood to make their pellets.
And each type of wood will give a different flavor to your food.

The first 2 most important factors for the wood type consideration are:

The best way to tell when it is time to refill your chips for your electric smoker is by paying attention to how often you happen to be adding wood in and checking your thermometer or meat probe: monitor what works best with your particular model and try adjusting accordingly.
And remember no more than a one-quarter cup per hour!
Most models only take about 5 to 10 minutes to heat up and it typically takes between 6-8 hours of continuous use.
There is no exact time that you should keep the chips in; the general consensus is that if you are not getting smoke, then you need more.
If during your smoking process there is a spillage, remove the food from the smoker and clean out any spilled pellets before reusing.
Be careful with your electric smoker’s venting system or fan because some models may suck in wood pellets through their vents which can cause performance issues.
