How long to smoke a turkey in a Masterbuilt electric smoker

I’m not sure if you know this, but smoking a turkey is the most difficult thing. Most people don’t even bother because they can’t figure out how to do it.

I have been cooking turkeys for Thanksgiving for 10 years now, and I have never used an electric smoker. This year I decided to take the plunge and try something new.

The Masterbuilt Electric Smoker looked like a good option because it was inexpensive and had great customer reviews.

But how long does it actually take to smoke a turkey in this thing?

Let’s find out!

Many factors go into smoking a turkey, like the type of wood you use and how much heat is put out by your smoker.

The general rule for cooking time starts at about 30 minutes per pound, however, this can be altered depending on what kind of smoker you have or if there’s wind/cold weather where you live, etc…

So basically, smoking a turkey takes quite some time. Some people recommend 16 hours while others say 12 hours will do just fine! Yikes… so which one should I choose?

Are my guests going to starve to death before they get their delicious Thanksgiving meal?!

Also, keep in mind that you should check your turkey every hour or so to avoid overcooking it.

So, how long does smoking a turkey take? It depends on the type of smoker that is being used and other factors such as cold weather, wind, etc…

It’s advised to keep an eye out for your poultry every hour to avoid overcooking it!

Also, I always use the Turkey Electric Roaster Calculator that helps you figure out how much turkey you need for a large group, such as a family or friend’s holiday dinner, estimating how many pounds of turkey you can fit in your electric roaster oven, gas oven, or smoker.

Now go forth and smoke some turkeys!!! 🙂

  • Turn on the smoker
  • Place turkey in smoker and close lid
  • Smoke for five hours if a 12-pound turkey or six hours if it weighs 14 pounds.
  • Check every hour by inserting a fork into the thickest part of the meat to see that it is white all the way through, not pink. If still pink cook longer.

If the turkey is done, take it out and place it on the platter. Let cool for 30 minutes before carving.

Gone are the days when I have to wait for hours for my meat to cook over an open fire. This smoker allows you to smoke all types of meats including poultry, beef, ribs, sausage, and much more in less than 4 hours!

It’s also lightweight so it’s easy for me to carry outside when I need fresh air or if I’m cooking on someone else’s grill. Plus there is no flame which means that it won’t leave a bad taste on my meat!

I love that I can adjust the heat and smoke according to what kind of food I’m making. Usually, when someone else is cooking, they have to check up every once in a while so this smoker takes away all the hassle.

It even has an LED display with clock & timer functions which means that not only does it provide me with a great way to smoke food, but it also makes my life easier!

That’s it!
