If you pay for electricity, then chances are good that your heat is electric. If it’s natural gas, then most likely it’s burning through pipes below ground to provide warmth for your family during the winter months.

Gas Heater vs Electric Heater

Electricity and gas are both used to heat homes, but they operate in very different ways. Electricity heats the air inside a home by passing it over resistance coils; this generates infrared radiation that warms up surrounding surfaces like walls, floors, and ceilings. Gas is burned (or combusted) outside of your house via one or more burners. The combustion produces heat that is then transferred through the air to your home.

During the winter months, your electric heater will draw electricity from a household outlet and transfer that energy to either a radiant heating panel or fan-forced blower. The heat is transferred through metal wires inside the unit which get very hot as they pass over resistance coils similar to how an electric stove works. As those coils heat up, so does everything around them.

Steps to determine gas furnace or electric furnace

Step one: Find your heating bill. If you are paying for electricity, then chances are good that your heat is electric.

Step two: Look on the bottom of a gas furnace and see if there’s an electrical cord plugged into it. A gas furnace will not have an electrical cord attached to it because they burn natural gas inside the home.

Step three: Turn the thermostat up to its highest setting and then turn it off or down so that your furnace stops working. If you have a gas heater, there will be no sound of clicking noise coming from within the unit as it shuts itself off when the desired temperature is reached (the fan might continue running, but it will not produce heat.)

Step four: If the fan shuts off, you have an electric furnace. Gas furnaces do not shut themselves down when they reach the desired temperature because they continue to burn through natural gas until manually turned off.
